I am writing this on the first day of March, the beginning of meteorological spring, the sun is shining and my trips out to Wild Hollow are becoming increasingly fruitful as a cascade of spring plants are now beginning to emerge.
The plants appearing now are colouring our washed out landsape with their sunny, verdant hues as the month unfolds on the approach to the Spring Equinox which occurs on March 20th this year. These early spring plants share many properties which are very desirable for the time of year. Emerging from a long winter, with very little sunlight, spending wet days indoors, perhaps havng succumbed to one or more of the many respiratory infections leaves its mark on our systems. We may feel sluggish, congested and keen to shake off those winter blues and work towards feeling great, ready to enjoy the delighful months ahead.
I sat by the brook on this beautiful day and contemplated the coming vernal Equinox and how this potent energetic point offers us vibrant energy that we should grasp with both hands, this is the ideal point in the year to sew seeds, set intentions and prepare to bloom in the coming months.
Herbs Of The Spring Equinox

Have you noticed that many plants that flower around the equinox resemble the sun? The Dandelion above, Celandine and Coltsfoot flowers too.
This could well be the 'law of similars' in action, drawing our eyes to these sunlike flowers and encouraging us to use them at this time. Their detoxifying properties will help us to make the most of the Equinox both physically and spiritually. We can cast off all we do not need, refresh and renew our systems and mindsets ready to bloom.
Celebrating The Spring Equinox
There are many ways we can connect with the powerful equinox energy, long associated with fertility and light-
Plant seeds See my Herb Growers Club where this will be covered over the Equinox
Embark on a detoxifcation programme- many traditional medical systems encourage detoxes at this special time. I will cover this more in future posts
Set intentions- reflect and embrace any changes you need to make
Spring clean your home- clear stagnant energies
Pagan Traditions
The Spring Equinox is known as Ostara in the pagan calender, this festival is named after the goddess Eostre and is associated with fertility, balance, renewal and the coming of spring. The light is welcomed in at sunrise, altars are decorated with symbolic offerings, flowers and decorated eggs
The equinox is where nature comes to a point of harmonious balance, the vernal equinox celebrates the equal amount of light and dark, day and night.
More posts to come in the week ahead as we approach the equinox, about embarking on a detoxification programme and which plants can help us achieve our balance.
