An Essential Guide To The Aromatherapy Oils Of Morocco- Labdanum
What Is Labdanum?

As you can see from the picture above, Labdanum is a brown/black resinous substance which exudes from the leaves and stems of the Rock Rose species (Cistus ladanifer & Cistus creticus).
The Rock Rose is native to the Mediterranean, North Africa and the Middle East, it grows in inhospitable, rocky locations exuding the sticky, aromatic resin in the summer months as a protective mechanism against strong sunlight and extreme heat.
Shepherds must have noticed the odour and combed the resin from the coats of their sheep and goats that had been collected whilst they grazed on the shrub. Nowadays the resin is extracted using solvents or from boiling the branches, the essential oil can be obtained via steam distillation of the plant's aerial parts.
Labdanum was valued highly in ancient Egypt as part of the incense blend Kyphi which was burned for rituals and ceremonies, to aid meditation and sleep and to purify. The resin was used in embalming and mumification practices.
The highly aromatic resin soon became a key perfumery ingredient used by the early Arab perfumers, Labdanum has a warm, complex scent with leathery tones combined with sweet- fruit and honey. Labdanum mimics Ambergris so is often used as a subsitute, it also functions in perfumery as a fixative.

Labdanum From Morocco
The Labdanum produced in Morocco makes a relatively small contribution to the global supply with most being sourced in Spain. Rock Rose grows well in the wild regions of the Rif and Atlas mountains and the Labdanum produced reflects the unique terroir of these regions.
Moroccan Labdanum is a highly balanced oleoresin which is sought for it's distinctive olfactory qualities produced in small batches and prized by perfumers.
Labdanum has been used in traditional Moroccan medicine, skincare, incense and, of course perfumes.

Take part in the transformative process of distillation and soap-making during hands-on workshops and begin with a guided, meditative sensory introduction to some key herbs.
Herbal Tourism is a growing niche in sustainable, nature-based transformative travel which keeps traditions alive, preserving Herbal Heritage and supporting rurual economies to continue foraging herbs.
It is important to give value to the wild landscapes of Morocco and preserve what grows there, alongside this it is equally important to preserve the knowledge and wisdom of the foragers and those who transform raw herbal material into usable products. These are the people who speak to the plants and translate to the people, the alchemists and weavers of magic.
