Further posts will include herbs used in Hammans and other cosmetic rituals in Morocco. Learn about foraging for wild herbs deep in the mountains and the journey they take to reach the artisans crafting remedies and the herboristes trading in the souks.

What Are Moroccan Herbs?

The climate and unique habitats of Morocco nurture an abundance of medicinal and aromatic plant species, over 4,000 can be found growing across very diverse landscapes from the fertile moutainous regions of the Rif and Atlas ranges to the arid Saharan plains.

The most well- known Moroccan herb is Moroccan Mint (Mentha spicata var.crispa) which you will soon encounter on a trip to Morocco. Mint is integral to social settings and hospitality and used in the tradtional mint tea ceremony . Mint will be the first of my ten herb choices in this series where each herb will be explored in its cultural and historical context.

Verbena is another herb used to make a traditional tea known as Verveine or Louiza. Lemon Verbena (Aloysia citriodora) is the refreshing, citrussy herb you will find on menus in cafes throughout Morocco.

Moroccan Thyme (Thymus spp.) is often combined with Oregano (Origanum syriacum) to create Za'atar. These pungent herbs are wild-harvested in the Atlas Mountains from several species. Za'atar is a key culinary ingredient in Moroccan cusine and both of these aromatic herbs are of great medicinal value.

The Damask Rose (Rosa damascena) is highly prized in Morocco and is celebrated in an annual rose festival. It thrives in the Valley of Roses and Dades Valley in the southern foothills of the Atlas mountains where 2, 000-4, 000 tonnes are produced annually. This beautiful rose is used to produce Rosewater and essential oil and is highly prized for cooking and cosmetics. How Are Herbs Used In Morocco?

Herbs are central to Moroccan life and culture and used in every home, knowledge about each of their unique uses passes between the generations and this legacy continues to this day.

Culinary Herbs In Morocco

Cooking with herbs is of course not unique to Moroccan cusine, but in Morocco herbs and spices are used boldly and give dishes their distinctive flavour, aroma and appearance. Fresh herbs are sold in the souks and streets in huge bunches for daily use in food and beverages.

Medicinal Herbs In Morocco

Many Moroccans will know basic herbal care, it still is common place in most households to routinely use herbs to address health concerns. In rural areas, herbal medicine is heavily relied upon in the absence of widely available modern medicine.

Herboristes are common place in all areas and their skills will be called upon when more expertise is required, they dispense in the souks and have an incredible array of products.

Cosmetic Herbs In Morocco

Natural and sustainable products for skin and hair care are growing in popularity, many consumers are consciously seeking brands that use pure herbs rather than synthetic chemicals and care about their origins. In Morocco cosmetics are traditional and based on naturally available ingredients, they are often handmade requiring artisanal skill to craft beautiful and effective products.

Beauty and self-care is ritualistic and holistic, hammans are the traditional bath houses that bring people together in a communal space to enjoy deep cleansing and purification with natural local products.

How Can I Explore Herbalism In Morocco?

Once in Morocco it is very easy to become engaged with herbal culture, every new introduction and encounter may very well begin with Mint tea. The food you eat will be full of herbs and spices, aromas such as frankincense perfume the air and the souk sellers offer mounds of colourful herbs and spices in beautiful displays.

If you want to explore a little deeper you can visit gardens, Herboriste shops and herb growers, but if you really want to get to grips with Morocco's enduring relationship with herbs you could consider a tour to the source of many herbs, the majestic Atlas Mountains.

Once in the wild Atlas regions you can trace the journey of herbs from their origins, where women are the custodians of plant wisdom, identifying and foraging the herbs before sending them on their journey to towns and cities.

Along the way, these herbs may reach distillers who perform their magic, extracting precious essential oils from rose petals or cosmetic formulators expertly crafting botanical skincare products.

An Immersive Herbal Tour Of Morocco - A Nomadic Herbalist & Timeless Fez Collaboration

Next spring, Nomadic Herbalist in conjunction with Timesless Fez will be hosting a unique Herbal Immersion aimed at those seeking slow, meaningful travel experiences that take them far beyond the usual tourist routes to get a rare glimpse into Morocco's thriving herbal heritage.

'Root & Remedies' is a four- day guided exploration to discover the medicinal plants of the Middle Atlas Mountains. This is a rare insight into foraging practices which are seldom seen and an opportunity to learn about Morocco's native herbs. The tour traces this ancient process from root to remedies, from the collection of raw plant material through to the finished products sold in the souks such as medicines in Souk Attarine and cosmetics in the Henna Souk.

Take part in the transformative processes of distillation and soap-making during hands-on workshops and begin with a guided, meditative sensory introduction to some key herbs.

Herbal tourism is a growing niche in sustainable, nature-based transformative travel which keeps traditions alive, preserving herbal heritage and supporting rural economies to continue foraging herbs.

It is important to give value to the wild landscapes of Morocco and preserve what grows there, alongisde this it is equally important to preserve the knowledge and wisdom of the foragers and those who transform raw herbal material into useful products. These are the people who speak to the plants and translate to the people, the alchemists and weavers of magic.
