Winter Skin Health With Foraged Chickweed - Skin Saviour Salve

Winter can be tough on sensitive skin- changing temperatures, raw winds, lack of sunlight and spending more time indoors in central heating can all stress and dehydrate skin. It is important to give your skin extra care and nourishment by using products that are rich in phytochemicals that boost skin health and soothe any imflammation.


At this time of year there are less plants to forage, Chickweed is usually to be found in abundance and is well worth foraging for food, medicine and cosmetics. Chickweed is a super easy and safe herb to use

Traditionally Chickweed has been used for the treatment of chronic skin conditions including - eczema, boils, eruptions and for gout. Indications for its use are red, hot, inflamed and irritated skin.

Chickweed is a common wild herb that grows like a weed, it is a fast growing annual with pretty star-like flowers and it grows all year round here with plenty available all winter. Chickweed is edible and very nutritious having gut health benefits like many wild foods.

Chickweed Benefits-


  • Healthy wild food- rich in vitamin C and gut health benefits

  • Mildly laxative

  • Demulcent

  • Emollient

  • Vulnerary

  • Anti-itch

  • Anti-rheumatic

  • Cooling- takes the heat out of itchy skin

  • Soothing - reduces irritation

Chickweed Infused Oil


Fresh or dried Chickweed (CHICKWEED HAS A HIGH WATER CONTENT SO DRY FIRST, EITHER HANG UP OR VERY LOW HEAT IN OVEN ON TRAY)


Olive Oil to cover


Fill a clean/sterile jar with the chickweed (about 1/2- 3/4 full)

Pour over enough olive oil to cover.

Leave to infuse for 4-6 weeks

Strain through clean muslin into sterile bottle

Add 1-2 drops vitamin E to prevent oxidation

Store for up to one year



Chickweed Skin Saviour Salve


This soothing and moisturising salve can be safely applied to any skin condition where there is irritation and inflammation, particularly if hot and itchy. Spray all equipment with Isopropanol alcohol and leave to dry to sanitize before use.



Ingredients


100 ml Chickweed Infused Oil

56g Shea butter

28g Beeswax

2 drops vitamin E oil

1-2 drops Lavender essential oil

Measure out the ingredients and add the beeswax to a bain-marie until melted

Add the shea butter and mix with whisk until melted and blended with wax


Slowly pour in the oil, whisking thoroughly


Remove from the heat and cool a little, then add vitamin E oil and essential oil whisking well


Pour into jars and allow to set
